Research Proposal Assignment on Bedside Handover in Health Care Setting

Question

Task: Write a research proposal assignment critically analysing the need of having bedside handover in a health care setting.

Answer

Research Proposal Assignment Background:
There is a wide range of ideas and perspectives of different researchers on the fact that bedside handover has a beneficial effect on promoting patient health and ensuring better quality treatment to these suffering individuals. Bedside handover has been providing better results when provided to critical care units due to having effective and advanced aspects such as better communication, patient-centered care, and minimized rate of error. According to Jeffs et al. (2014), the study conducted to evaluate the perceptions and experiences of patientstowards bedside handover nursing provided three chiefthemes. These themes described the patient'sexperiences stating that it creates a better space between the nurse and the patient for the development of personal connection. The jerk ups the speed of the entire process and provides and supports varying preferences of the nurses and the patient regarding the treatment and recovery options (Jeffs et al., 2014). In a study conducted by, McMurray et al. (2011), it was stated that bedside handover initiates patient participation which is one of the chief characteristics of patient-centered care. It provides nurses with the opportunity to understand and consider the needs and requirements of the patients and help them attain a better treatment option. It initiates the active participation of the patients in the process of decision making which is an essential factor of better treatment and recovery (McMurray et al., 2011).

In another study conducted by Street et al. (2011), bedside handover is one of the effective strategies which helps in the continuation of providing better care and improvement of patient safety in case of the healthcare handover process. The study findings suggested that bedside handover initiates better communication and participation of both patients and nurses which ultimately enhances the continuity of effective careand treatment (Street et al., 2011).According to Lu, Kerr, and McKinlay, (2014), among all the contemporary nursing processes, the bedside handover practice has been accounted to be one of the most potential and best suitable process to sustain patient-centered care. Thus, the literature review conducted in assessment 1 has accounted for similar ideas and perspectives of the researchers who have comparable findings and results attained from their studies (Lu, Kerr& McKinlay, 2014). The studies thus state that bedside handover has initiated a better opportunity for the nurses as well as the patients to create greater opportunities for the betterment from their health complications.

Research question/ objective:
A research question generally provides a goal and target for the study that will be conducted. It helps in focusing on the desired goal as it sets the target which needs to be achieved using the research study. The research question for the study includes:"Does bedside handover in health care and clinical setting have a better role in enhancing the treatment and recovery options of the patient?".

The main objective of the study is to interpret the effectiveness of bedside handover in providing better and advanced treatment and recovery from their health complications in a health care setting. It intends to assess the perspectives of patients and nurses towards the bedside handover and analyze their viewpoints on the usefulness of this procedure. The study will help in evaluating how effective a bedside handover is over any other handover process in providing better treatment and recovery options to the suffering patients.

Significance of the study:
It is necessary that proper study and research is conducted which will clearly define the difference and need of having bedside handover in a health care setting. It is important to evaluate and understand the need of having bedside handover in order to develop and enhances the effectiveness of treatment and care provided to the patients. It is so because another type of patient handovers often leads to the development of treatment and medication error and there is a huge gap within the health care settings regarding the handover practice. According to the study conducted by Drach?Zahavy and Hadid, (2015), it was found that the patient handover process often accounted for several treatments and medication errors. Patients were provided with an inappropriate dose of medications, there was delayed administration, and even missing data was also witnessed when the patient handover was initiated between nurses (Drach?Zahavy and Hadid, 2015). The study findings thus suggest the significance of having bedside handover in health care settings as it ensures that the patient is also allowed to take participate in the entire process of handover and thus will have the fair knowledge about what medication and treatment are provided with the significance to the health complication.

Methodology:
Study Design:

The study focuses on using the systematic review as its study design which can be qualitative as well as quantitative in nature depending up on the articles and studies that are used to review and analyze the desired outcomes. Systematic review does not have any specific qualitative or quantitative type of study design but it can follow either of them to provide a better structure to the study. As the study uses articles which are both quantitative and qualitative in nature thus, it can be said that the study is focused on both the type of study design (Smith et al., 2011).

Setting and Sample:
As the study is entirely focused on the literature review which makes it a systematic review study, thus there is no such specific setting used to conduct the study. Though the study has a set of the sample from which the data has been attained in order to provide a fair and appropriate set of results. The study has been conducted using 10 peers reviewed article which was published between the year 2010 to 2020 and have their relation and similarity to the proposed research question of the study. The data will be attained from the findings of these selected samples and will be used to interpret the data attained by different researchers on the benefit of bedside handover practice. Thus, the selected 10 peer-reviewed articles can be stated to be the sample on behalf of which the entire study will be performed.

Data Collection:
Data collection is known to be a process of collection and gathering of significant information and data which can be used to evaluate the desired finding for the study that has been conducted (Wilson& Fox, 2013). It helps in answering the research question that has been asked to attain a significant goal for the study. The data has been collected using systematic review were the findings of the 10 different studies will be collected and evaluated for the further process of data analysis.

Data Analysis:
Data analysis is stated as a step of providing structure, design, and order along with meaning to the collected data. The study was conducted based o a systematic review of selected 10 research articles, thus, the data will be analyzed based on a research question that was developed using PICO format. The findings attained from the data collected from the research articles will be analyzed and assessed in order to evaluate their relationship with the research question. the appropriateness of the data will be interpreted based on their responses on the benefits of the bedside handover process. It will help in arranging and providing a simple structure to the wide range of data and information attained from the research findings attained from the 10 different peers reviewed articles (Govaert, 2013).

Ethical Consideration:
Ethical consideration plays a major role in the betterment and building effectiveness of the research and study conducted. It helps in addressing and accounting for legal as well as ethical values which may often lead to a barrier in the study if not addressed significantly. It will be necessary to take permission and approval from the university and the higher authorities under whom the study is to be conducted (Connelly, 2014). It will help in having proper authorization of the higher authorities which will be attained by providing a detailed structure andidea about the entire study that has to be performed. Also, the systematic review requires a critique of several articles for different authors and researchers, thus to avoid any issue related to patent, it will be required to fairly cite the authors and their research work in the study.

Project Timeline:
A project timeline is generally defined as a list or track of steps and procedures which need to be taken into processing while performing a researchstudy. It provides an overview of the durationthat will be required to perform complete each step of the research study (van der Leeuw et al., 2012).
