Nursing Essay: Impact of Hospitalization on Young Adults & Their Family

Question

Task: Write a nursing essay where you critically examine the impact of hospitalisation for patients and their families experiencing acute or chronic illness.

Answer

The comprehensive analysis of the Australian nursing and midwifery board standards regarding training provided to a registered nurse handling hospitalization and care of patients experiencing acute and chronic illness is explained in the nursing essay. The overall impact of hospitalization faced by the patient and the family members experiencing acute and chronic illnesses is also considered. The report also emphasizes the management policies of exacerbations of chronic diseases and their impact on the psychological, physical, and emotional well-being of the patient and the family(Merry, M., & Silverman, 2021). Jenny is a 34-year-old female diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and is admitted to the hospital due to a relapse in her symptoms. It is necessary to administer her a high dose of parenteral Steroids. The long-term impact on the patient and the family members is discussed.

The Australian nursing and midwifery board
The Australian nursing board develops standards, codes, and specific guidelines for the nursing profession and implements important feedback necessary for chronic nursing. The board develops appropriate standards, guidelines, and codes for the nursing and midwifery profession, handling and investigating any disciplinary action initiated on the nurses (Hickman et al., 2016). The board maintains all the standards to give appropriate training and education to the nurses, making them trained practitioners and professionals to practice in Australia with approved and accredited standards and courses.

Chronic disease and multiple sclerosis
Chronic disease can be simply defined as a disease that lasts for more than one year and requires regular and ongoing medical attention. It is very important to note that people facing chronic diseases require regular medical attention, limiting their daily activities. Multiple sclerosis is a very severe chronic disease directly affecting the Brain, and the final call can be the central nervous system. The disease directly attacks the protective sheath; the main duty is to power the nerves causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. In the long run, the disease causes permanent damage to the nerves.

The clinical reasoning cycle and evaluation of person cantered care
The clinical reasoning cycle is a process in which the nurses understand the problems of the patients and updates the same on regular intervals. They even collect and process the information after that the doctors make appropriate planning successful implementations. In Jenny case the nurses are monitoring her health regularly treating her with dignity and respect. The nurses are providing her coordinated support and treatment. The nurses are even offering personalised support and treatment to taking care of her needs. The process is necessary as it meets the emotional needs of the patient in the hospitals giving them enough confidence thereby improving their independence

The mental impact on Jenny
Jenny is a 34-year-old female married and has two daughters; she is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Jenny is very guilty about the situation, one for not managing the diseases and her illness's demands to the family. Jenny is facing increased depression and anxiety and reduced quality of life due to mental sclerosis, which has also caused a very uncertain future. The journey is facing limitations in the overall daily activity due to fatigue and physical weakness. She is also facing coordination and balance problems with no heat and cold sensitivity and memory problems (Fenton et al., 2014). She regrets herself as she did not manage her disease carefully and is now facing trouble in concentration even difficulty sleeping. The doctor has specifically advised a long-term rest because multiple sclerosis has a long-lasting effect on the Brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Jenny is facing a problem of low vision and lack of muscle control. The overall cost of treating multiple sclerosis, including direct and indirect expenses and all the pre-hospitalization and post-hospitalization charges, is around 21000 Australian dollars. It becomes very important to mention that Jenny has two daughters. One is 13-year-old Mia, and the other is 9-year-old Claire, both very small to take care of themselves and need parental support at all times. Journey only primary care for the children as she used to prepare meals for the family, take for shopping and do all household work. The situation of Jenny directly impacts the day-to-day activity of the family (Hopkins et al., 2020). Grace is her husband, but 800 works as a position of paramedic with Ambulance Victoria. There is good hope because a parametric is a Healthcare professional with the primary duty to provide very professional and advanced medical care for critical patients. Grace understands the position of his wife F&D can handle the situation with full responsibility and economy as he must stabilize the life-threatening injuries and other impacts.

To cope with the situation, Jenny should reduce her emotional distress and focus on her emotional needs and her relationship with her daughter and husband. Jenny should deny worries and avoid disagreement.

The psychological impact on the family
The family develops a kind of homeostasis that is a dynamic and normal routine when a person develops chronic diseases. A chronic disease like multiple sclerosis defines stress and changes the duties and responsibilities of the family members, creating several chances in self-esteem. People feel emotionally discussed helplessness and develop emotional issues with anxiety and depression. All the family duties are now under Grace, which makes his life very burden with overall family responsibilities taking care of his wife, visiting the hospitals, and doing his work that is of a paramedic. The doctors are very small to take care of themselves, and they need constant current attention for which the family has to keep a child caretaker, which increases the financial burden in the long run as the cost of treating Jenny's disease is also very high (Jones et al., 2021). The tortoise and even place suffer from great emotional impact leading to guilt, anger, and frustration. The children of Jenny are facing emotional distress and anxiety because they cannot cope and understand the overall situation and seeing their mother in such pain and difficult situation. The children are at constant threat of losing their mother. There is a huge financial burden on the family as Jenny was also a working member but cannot work now and will not be able to work for a long time (Gnanamanickam et al., 2020). Grace, her husband, has to come up with all the family expenses, including the expenses of Jenny's treatment. The financial burden sometimes causes the death of all family members. It even puts financial position, making the situation very challenging, increasing stress and causing emotional effects that Grace currently faces.

The family should constantly communicate with each other and use empathetic listening skills and consider every family member's perspective. Supporting each other at this distance is very necessary, and every member should ask for support when needed.
