Environmental law assignment: Portfolio Analysis On Climate Change

Question

Task: For this assessment, each student will be analysing two news articles for tutorial discussion and submission on two separate weeks (3 & 5). The emphasis is on identifying the marketing implications for the events or incidents described in the article.

Students are required to choose ONE of the news articles (from the list below) that focuses on one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and write marketing implications of the news. The first two tutorial weeks are designed to discuss how to analyse the sample news articles that focuses on UNSDGs. Specific questions that students need to answer include:
(1) Which of the UNSDGs does the new article relate to?
(2) Who are the important stakeholders?
(3) What potential marketing issues can be identified from the article?
(4) How would you respond to these issues and why?
For the last question students are required to include minimum of 5 references for each submission. This is an individual assessment with a maximum word limit of 1000 for each article analysis.

Only references used in text should be included in your reference list. The references should consist of published academic and research papers and textbooks in the write-up to support key points. Ensure that your references are relevant to the issues discussed. Referencing should follow the APA style.

Each article analysis submission is worth 10% equating to a total of 20% of the mark for the unit. Tutorial class activities in weeks 1 and 2 are designed to assist students in preparing for 1a assessment (due on Friday, week 3) and 1b assessment (due on Friday, week 5). Tutors will take note of the participants in class. Distance/online/flex students will discuss their analysis of articles 1a and 1b in the allocated Moodle discussion forum in weeks 3 and 5, respectively.

Any assessment with a ‘Turnitin’ score of more than 25% will be checked by the marker and unit coordinator for potential plagiarism issues although it may not necessarily mean that you have plagiarised. If there is a substantial similarity score in the ‘Turnitin’ report, your assessment could be forwarded to an appropriate office/authority.

Following are the list of articles for assessment 1a and 1b. You only need to choose one article for each of the assessments. Choosing a different article than the ones listed below can result in no mark given for the assessment.

Answer

Introduction & UNSDG identification
In this part of this environmental law assignmentit has been possible for me to analyse portfolio articles from the given list and justify them with UNSDGs. For suitability climate change unseen in environment laws’ news article has been taken into consideration for portfolio review. The news article described the Barrier Reef ecosystem and how they suffered in a bleaching event caused by global warming. This third article has also referred to the climate action and related key environmental laws for wildlife & biodiversity conservation.

It can also be suggested in the environmental law assignment that Sustainable goal number 13 and 14 of UNSDGs that referred to Climate action and Life below water is acquired correctly for this case study of news articles. Furthermore, we are broadly discussing it in the following sections of this assessment.

2. Stakeholder Identification
Relevant key stakeholders who are responsible for the external environment and the climate change & laws news article has been identified herein environmental law assignment.

  • Stakeholder I: Federal Government, Australia- Miller, (2017), stated that, Federal government is Responsible for protecting the wildlife and coral ecosystems and maintaining the key environmental laws from which they are failing. They are considered as external but sometimes they act as internal stakeholder. The governing laws to protect Australia's unique fauna & flora are responsible by the federal government. Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) is the related law.
  • Stakeholder II: World Heritage-
They are purely considered as external stakeholders for this selected case and give the suggestive reports and stats about the coral ecosystem which may be beneficial for the research purpose and finding the necessary similarities to meet the UNSDGs (Madichie & Madichie, 2018).
  • Stakeholder III: Commonwealth government-
For this particular species i.e. reef ecosystem this external stakeholder provides an outlook report that shows how global warming has deteriorated the climate process and underwater lives.
  • Stakeholder IV: Australian Research Council-
Throughout the news article it has been possible for me stakeholder like them who are the leading contributors to find out the reason for diminished reefs and related legislation that mitigate its impacts (Ohdedar, 2017, p. 695). They are the key internal stakeholder.

3. Reflective Analysis
3.1. What are the potential marketing issues mentioned in the environmental law assignment?

The analysis illustrates excellent identification of key issues that are derived from the newspaper article related to the topic undertaken in the context of environmental law assignment.

Table 1: Key Issues within the newspaper article (Source: Cullet & Stephan, 2018)

Potential Marketing Issues

Marketing Implications

Fail to meet environmental laws &criteria’s

Australian environment laws are failing to protect reef ecosystems and wildlife which is a big loss in upcoming potential markets.

EPBC act has also failed to meet its requirements so that may be a major issue with the marketing implications.

Based on the perspective of Gulliver, Fielding & Louis, (2019, p. 6) considered in the environmental law assignment, Quantifying extinction risk will have more and effects on the potential reef ecosystem markets while failing to introduce environmental laws.

Improper use of environmental laws may be effective on climate action and does not satisfy the sustainability goals at the end.

Climate change into the ecosystem

Due to the continued rise in temperature, climate changing issues such as droughts, bushfires, heatwaves have been noticed.

Conservation marketing with the threatened species will be a worse place for climate change.

Global warming has been increased and for which sustainability in potential living markets decreased.

Gulliver, Fielding & Louis, (2019, p. 10), stated that, Mass bleaching made a huge impact for the underwater livings.

Loss of ecosystem/ Barrier Reef

Aquarium markets have been down for this case and it is becoming dangerous to save the lives of reefs and recover them (Cullet & Stephan, 2018).

Climate change will be triggered for barrier reef major projects while inserted into laws.

Mammal losses continue at the same rate from previous decades.

One hundred and more species have become extinct from the earlier 1788 year.

Federal Government Problems

While the federal environment minister fails to reverse the rate of biodiversity losses then they also lose their marketing position.

Enforcing federal environment ministers to fund action plans otherwise it becomes tougher to prevent species becoming extinct or get reduced with the populations (Cullet & Stephan, 2018).

3.2. Respond to these Issues
According to Gulliver, Fielding & Louis, (2019, p. 13), identifying the problems from the news article selected in the environmental law assignment about climate change and actions which are dangerous for reef ecosystems it has been possible for me to take significant steps against those problems and mitigating those risks.

  • It is necessarily required to take major steps by the Federal government, environment minister of Australia to stand against these issues.
  • I would like to suggest that increasing communication with the stakeholders can meet the expectations and get out from these issues.
  • According to me introducing new environmental laws & legislation for the underwater lives, wildlife is necessary to take actions because the previous laws don't work properly to save their lives (Ohdedar, 2017, p. 705).
  • It has been possible for me to recommend surrounding people and government to moving towards sustainability so that major climate actions & change (i.e. Global warming) does not occur and is harmful.
  • Use of plastics, bags, polyethene and throwing to the sea, river needs to be controlled and for this plastic prohibition act must be taken into consideration by the Australian government.
  • Addressing the potential marketing issues and risks, I would respond to these issues because if the problems still continue all the underwater lives are in major threats in upcoming days.
  • On the other hand, my suggestion towards UNSDGs and recommend to meet them without harming the potential markets, aquarium lives, barrier reef ecosystem naturally (Madichie & Madichie, 2018).
  • Finally, not yet importantly, controlling the proper use of environmental laws is necessary in this case to mitigate the risks in potential markets and climate changing actions.

4. Summary
After discussing key stakeholders, potential marketing issues this portfolio article analysis on environmental law assignment can be concluded as to give some recommendations to meet the UNSDGs based on the news. In future, how it has been possible for me to identify those issues and mitigate them with proper controlling actions with the help of federal government and concerned environmental laws in Australia.
